KILLINGTON, Vtt, – Powdr Resorts, the parent company of Killington Resort and Pico Mountain, launched an environmental initiative called Protect Your Playground in early 2014 which sought sustainability ideas from the community and offered to fund sustainability initiatives at each of its resorts. On Earth Day 2014, Killington Resort is pleased to announce that nearly $9,000 of the over $40,000 that Powdr will invest across its nine mountain areas in the program’s first year will support projects at Killington.
Killington received the second most project idea submissions among Powdr Resorts, and they came primarily from season pass holders, local students and teachers, and resort staff. The submission period ended on February 21, 2014, and the resort’s Go Green Team then narrowed the field to three finalist ideas and opened a period of public comment through the Killington Insider Blog and social media channels.
The three finalist ideas were well received by the local community and Powdr’s chief sustainability officer alike, and all three will be implemented this year.
Killington’s three Protect Your Playground winning projects are: installation of electric vehicle charging stations, installation of soap and shampoo dispensers in the Killington Resort Grand Hotel to reduce plastic packaging and waste, and construction of on-mountain terrain park features from recycled and retired materials around the resort such as gondola cabins, mechanical equipment and crushed cans.
“Many inspired ideas come from devoted community members looking to make a positive impact right here at Killington,” says Kelly O’Brien, marketing manager at Killington and Go Green Team chair. “We were blown away by the creativity of the submissions and are excited to implement our winning projects and to see the program grow year over year.”
Each community member who submitted a sustainability idea will receive a complimentary Mizu reusable stainless steel water bottle.
“Protect Your Playground was created to empower and inspire individuals with the resources they need to turn their ideas into action to better their communities and protect their environment,” says Brent Giles, chief sustainability officer at Powdr Resorts. “We were ecstatic with the number and quality of applications and we look forward to seeing these projects come to life and to watch the lasting impact they will have on their environments in the future. The grant recipients are proof that one person with a vision for change can make a difference,” adds Giles.
Look for the debut of electric car charging stations, liquid dispensers, and recycled terrain park features during the winter 2014-15 season at Killington Resort. Winter 2014-15 Unlimited Season Passes, which offer three bonus days of skiing and riding at each Powdr resort, are now on sale at www.killington.com.
