QUINCY, Mass., September 11, 2013 – The Arbella Insurance Foundation (“Foundation”) has awarded a grant of $50,000 to New England Disabled Sports at Loon Mountain as part of its “50 to 25” program, which presented one-time grants of $50,000 to 25 local charities throughout Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Connecticut. “50 to 25” was created in recognition of the Arbella Insurance Group (“Arbella”)’s 25th anniversary and the important role the Foundation plays in supporting the communities Arbella serves.
The mission of New England Disabled Sports is, through sports, to change lives affected by disabilities. New England Disabled Sports will use its 50 to 25 grant towards “Sports for Life” (SFL), a 3-day program planned for March 28 – 30, 2014, which will immerse participants in the Adaptive Sporting experience through active engagement, educational instruction and resource-sharing. SFL will begin on Friday evening with a welcome reception and a keynote address from a Paralympic athlete. On Saturday, there will be opportunities to try equipment, “how to” clinics, motivational talks from Paralympic and elite athletes who have disabilities, and a chance to visit with the vendors and organizations that are present. Adaptive sport videos will play throughout the weekend and the conference will finish up on Sunday with a fun downhill alpine race, designed for full participation by all SFL attendees.
The Foundation’s Selection Committee chose the 25 recipient charities from proposals thoughtfully submitted by Arbella employees, independent insurance agents and longtime charitable partners. Checks were presented to the selected charities at a celebratory luncheon in Quincy on September 10th. The selected charities are involved in social services, health and/or education.
“We are thrilled that Arbella has given New England Disabled Sports the opportunity to provide an educational and networking opportunity to the entire adaptive sporting community. The long term impact from this grant will be felt for years to come through the knowledge sharing and networking that transpire.” said Geoff Krill, Sports Director of New England Disabled Sports.
“We’re proud to be celebrating Arbella’s 25th anniversary this year,” said John Donohue, chairman, president and CEO of the Arbella Insurance Group and chairman and president of the Arbella Insurance Foundation. “In recognition of that milestone and the important role Arbella’s Foundation plays in supporting our communities, we wanted to do something that would have a real impact in our communities. I can’t imagine a better way to celebrate Arbella’s 25 years of serving New England than to recognize the charities that are helping to make this region thrive.”
“It’s gratifying to see how much the grants mean to these charities,” added Beverly Tangvik, director of the Arbella Insurance Foundation. “They’re doing wonderful work to make a difference and improve the lives of those in need. We are so proud to support the important contributions these charitable organizations are making to our communities.”
