Originally called Montage Mountain Ski Area, the resort was developed by Lackawanna County, Pennsylvania, using federal economic development funds. In 1979, the county bought the land from Pennsylvania Gas & Water Co. for $14 million. Construction began in January 1984 and was completed in time for the grand opening in December. In 2006, Lackawanna County sold the 388-acre ski resort to Sno Mountain, LP for $5.1 million. Sno Mountain, LP is a Philadelphia-based investment group. The new owners filed a Chapter 11 petition for bankruptcy in 2012.
In 2013, the resort is under new ownership and is now called Montage Mountain once again, foregoing the Sno Mountain name.
