Get Your Skis Apart! - Page 1
By Todd Murchison, February 7,
2001
It's no longer Functional or Fashionable to ski the Stein
Way!
Technology has come a long way in the last forty years.
Boots and bindings give a more accurate and firm interface with skis now than in the past.
Even just thirty years ago skis had to be somewhat forced into a turn. On that older
equipment the most efficient way to turn was to pivot your skis as a unit. A narrow stance
allowed for more equal control over both skis, if you tried to stand in a natural walking
or running stance and pivot both feet quickly - you might find yourself with tangled feet
and a face full of snow! In time it also became very fashionable to ski with the feet
glued together. Stein Erikson was worshipped for his ability to do this. Everybody wanted
to ski the Stein way. That style of skiing was an elegant and functional way of using the
ski technology of the time. Stein was an amazing athlete to ski as well as he did on the
equipment of the period. Unfortunately peoples minds seems to change more slowly than
technology! Thirty years later many people still strive to ski like Stein! And while
people should certainly do whatever they wish for fun, I think many don't realize the fun
they are missing!
