I Want to Ski Bumps Like the Pros - Page 3
By Todd Murchison, January 15, 2001

Top Instructors, and Patrollers show the evidence of thousands of days on their skis. They ski every day and in every condition to make their living. And while sometimes having to slog through deep snow carrying eighty pounds of bamboo, or skiing backwards in a wedge holding up a two hundred pound tourist may not be glamorous - this coupled with vast experience in other circumstances leads to powerful and functional skiing. When playing in the bumps these professionals usually ski a little further out of the fall line. Instead of trying to always keep their feet glued to the ground they will accept that their skis wont always stay on the snow. Using leg strength, ski construction, and tactics rather than just pure reflexes they will often use the moguls as a tool to keep a consistent speed, turning directly into the crowns of the bumps. Throughout the run they will strive to stay smooth and balanced by constantly absorbing and extending.

This style of mogul skiing demands experience and a smooth deliberate application of strength. A patroller or instructor at the top of their field, skiing at their best is beautiful to watch in the bumps. They play in the bumps, making turns of varying radius and making it look like it takes no effort - offering a shock to the hapless observer who hops in the mogul field behind them and finds out its not so easy to be smooth!
