wife_carrying_contestNewry, Maine —In just over a month, 50 couples will clear hurdles, cross ponds, and, with any luck, a finish line—all without letting go of one another. No, this is not a three-legged race, nor is it Titanic. It’s better: The Annual North American Wife Carrying Championship. And it’s back for the 15th year with more single-minded competitors, both local and international.

On Saturday, October 11 at 11 a.m., the 15th Annual North American Wife Carrying Championship will hit the slopes of Sunday River Ski Resort and thousands of eyes will be glued to the course for approximately two hours, as 50 pre-registered couples from around the world test their wife-carrying skills on a 278-yard alpine obstacle course. This year’s couples are competing for the championship title and exciting prizes, including the “wife’s” weight in beer and five times her weight in cash.

In addition to the Wife Carrying hoopla, Fall Festival weekend will be loaded with all kinds of family friendly activities.

Some of New England’s favorite bands will be performing at free outdoor concerts. Check sundayriver.com for a full lineup in the very near future.

Fancy meeting a Belgian draft horse or two? Bill and Ben, from Meadow Creek Farm in Sumner, Maine, will be providing free scenic wagon rides to Fall Festival revelers of all ages on Saturday and Sunday between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

Kiddies will also enjoy pony rides, face painting, chainsaw sculpting demonstrations, and plenty of carnival-style games, thanks to the Lewiston swim team.

Grown-ups should most definitely check out our wine tent on the patio of South Ridge. One fixed price will get you a wine glass etched with Sunday River’s logo, unlimited wine samples, and amazing appetizer pairings.

Of course, all of Sunday River’s go-to activities will also be available during Fall Festival weekend, including zipline tours, Twin Zips, the climbing wall, bungee trampoline, and scenic lift rides.

If you err on the side of artsy, you won’t want to miss the 31st Annual Blue Mountain Arts and Crafts Fair at South Ridge Lodge on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. Over 40 regional artists and artisans will exhibit paintings, fine jewelry, pottery, woodworking, photography, and more.

Fall Festival weekend lodging packages are available and start at $79 per person, per night.
