LAKE PLACID, New York ??вЂќ Usher in spring and say goodbye to winter at the third annual Adirondack Almost Springfest beginning March 12. This celebration of the seasons culminates Sunday, March 20 at the Olympic venues in Lake Placid and Wilmington.
The New York State Olympic Regional Development Authority is offering this family-oriented week-long celebration. It will have everything from the Verizon Luge Challenge to two-for-one adult ski or snowboard lessons, slopestyle and super pipe championships at Whiteface, to learn-to-ski jump and luge at the MacKenzie-Intervale Ski Jumping Complex, to the Springathlon and skijoring at the Verizon Sports Complex Cross Country Center.
The Slopestyle Championships, presented by Viking Ski Shop, kicks off this year’s Adirondack Almost Springfest. This event is open to all skiers and riders who want to ride the rails and ramps at Whiteface. Registration begins at 8:30 am. NASTAR fun ski competitions will pit the USA against Canada, and are scheduled throughout the week. The popular First Tracks program will be offered daily at 8 am, also starting March 12. Sign up at the Whiteface Snow Sports School desk. The Snow Sports School is also offering 2-for-1 adult ski and/or snowboard lessons throughout the week.
The Verizon Luge Challenge makes a stop at Whiteface March 12-13 from 9 am ??вЂњ 2 pm. The challenge takes place on the Round-A-Bout trail with U.S. Olympic athletes in attendance. This free event is open to the public, ages 10 and up. Whiteface is also hosting the Super Pipe Championships, presented by Burton Snowboards, on March 19 at 8:30 am. This event is open to the public with sign-up at Guest Services. The Glengarry Bhoys return to the Cloudspin Lounge on March 20. This free concert runs from 3 pm ??вЂњ 6 pm.
Opening day also features the Golden Arrow Springer Tourney at the MacKenzie-Intervale Ski Jumping Complex. This competition features U.S. athletes from the developmental levels and higher competing in ski jumping. The highlight of the event is the 1 pm 90-meter ski jump competition. A Learn to Ski Jump clinic is offered on Wednesday, March 16 at 3:30 pm and a Learn to Luge clinic is scheduled for March 18 at 12 pm the jumping complex’s outrun. Staff coaches will show participants the basics of their respective sports. Basic skiing skills are required for the jumping clinic.
At the Verizon Sports Complex Cross Country Center, the Springathlon wraps up the Nordic Fun Race series, sponsored by High Peaks Cyclery. The Springathlon features cross country skiing, snowshoeing and mountain biking all in the same race. This event is open to the public with registration at 1 pm and racing at 2 pm. There are guided Ski and Snow Shoe Treks to the Sugar Shack during the week, and the Dog Days of Winter skijoring clinic March 19 from 10 am ??вЂњ 2 pm.
The Verizon Sports Complex is offering luge rocket rides on the world’s newest combination track. Expanded hours are 12:30 pm ??вЂњ 4 pm March 12-13, and 11 am to 4 pm March 14-20.
In the Olympic Center, the 1932 Rink is open March 13-16 for public skating. You can turn laps on the ice from 7-9 pm March 13, 3-5 pm and 7-9 pm March 14-15, and from 3-5 pm March 16. A curling and hockey shot session is on tap for March 14 from 7-9 pm.
The 1932 and 1980 Lake Placid Winter Olympic Museum is open daily from 10 am ??вЂњ 5 pm. The museum opened a new exhibit featuring artwork done by Arti Torrance. His 25th anniversary paintings are on display in the museum. The museum also offers a Walt Disney Pictures MIRACLE exhibit, featuring a sport coat worn by Kurt Russell as coach Herb Brooks in this popular, current motion picture. The museum also enables visitors to re-live Lake Placid’s two Olympic Winter Games, including the first-ever gold medal won at the Winter Olympic Games in 1928 and souvenirs of the ???Miracle on Ice??? from the 1980 Lake Placid Olympic Winter Games.
