Jay Peak Announces Summer Capital Improvement Plan – Stateside Base Area Renovations and More
Camps, Concerts and Construction Planned for Jay Peak’s Summer
May 13, 2013 (Jay, VT)- Jay Peak Resort today released its summer schedule and it’s a busy one. In addition to the golf course’s recent opening on May 11, summer camps for foodies and adventurers alike, concerts, weekly barbeques and farmers’ markets, the resort will continue its ambitious revitalization initiative. This time the focus will be on the Stateside area.
Projects include a new 80,000-square foot base lodge with restaurants and locker rooms, a rental center and hotel, 84 new mountain cottages, and a complete revamping of the resort’s entrance. The old Stateside Chalet has already been razed and construction on the new base facility is underway.
“This latest phase of revitalization will be the busiest and most aggressive construction schedule we’ve seen since we started the initiative five years ago,” said Jay Peak president Bill Stenger. “It’s our goal to have the new Stateside base area ready for skiers and riders by this Christmas and that means all of our resources will be moving at full speed.”
The new base lodge, rental center and 85-room hotel will all be constructed right at the base of Jay Peak’s Stateside area—the part of the resort that first opened for skiing in 1955. The 84 mountain cottages will be built on a parcel of land between the resort’s existing entrance and where the new entrance will be, farther east on route 242.
In addition to the Stateside projects, construction of a new wedding and event space is already underway. The Barn, as it is being called, will be a 2,000-square foot facility located between the first tee and ninth green of Jay Peak’ golf course, and will open this July.
All told, Jay Peak will be investing more than $25 million this summer in its continuing revitalization project, a project that has already seen more than $300 million poured into resort-wide improvements.
On the Tram side of the resort, summer camps and concerts will be the focus. The Resort has five weeks of Raised Jay summer camps scheduled for the warm season with three week-long sessions in July and two sessions in August. Resort officials have said a number of weeks have already sold out and they encourage interested parties to visit jaypeakresort.com to check availability.
Summer got underway last Saturday with the resort’s championship golf course opening for its eight season.
“We are excited to get the season started and are in the best shape we have ever been in this early in the year,” said course superintendent Howie Nosek. “Our irrigation system has really helped us through the dry spring, putting us in near mid-summer shape.”
The Jay Peak Golf Course has been named the Number One public course in Vermont for the third year in a row by GolfWeek Magazine. Plus, Golf Digest just awarded the course the same honor for 2013. The resort offers up to a 50% discount to members of every other golf club in the Northeast Kingdom on daily play greens fees, with some restrictions. Details can be found at area clubs and courses.
On the program side of things, Jay Peak’s new PGA pro Doug Reynolds is focusing on bringing new golfers to the sport this summer. Reynolds has partnered with GetGolfReady.com to introduce the sport to those who may have never golfed, or only participated a handful of times. Get Golf Ready is designed to teach newcomers that they’ll need to play golf in just a few lessons. The five-week $99 program focuses on the various golf skills one will use while playing. In addition to learning the basics, participants will be guided onto the golf course to put the skills into action in a casual, friendly setting.
