Snowshoe Receives Another 16" of Snow, Celebrates Thanksgiving with Expanded Terrain
SNOWSHOE, West Virginia — Snowshoe Mountain continues to have a historic early season, as the Pocahontas County resort received another 16″ of natural snow on Tuesday. The resort was scheduled to open on Wednesday, Nov 26, but a massive storm that dropped almost 3-feet of snow last week allowed the slopes to open early, on Friday, November 21. Since Friday, Snowshoe has seen another 20″ of snow fall, and freezing temperatures have allowed snowmaking equipment to run nearly around the clock for the last two weeks. On Monday, the resort began making snow on Cupp Run, Snowshoe’s signature slope, which may open as early as Dec. 5th.
With crowds of snow-enthusiasts expected to take advantage of the phenomenal conditions over the Holiday Weekend, Snowshoe has expanded its open terrain to 14 slopes and 4 lifts for Wednesday. Three additional slopes are scheduled to open on Thursday, and Saturday should see another 7 slopes and another lift added to the open terrain, giving skiers and snowboarders 80 acres to enjoy. The resort’s terrain park areas also debuted on Wednesday with 5 features in the Powder Monkey Terrain Garden. More features are expected to open in the Spruce Glades Terrain Park later this week. Adding even more on-snow fun, Snowshoe also announced Monday that the resort’s 5-lane tubing hill will be open Thursday, November 26 to Saturday, November 29 from 3 to 9 p.m. daily.
With Tuesday’s snowfall, Snowshoe has now seen 63.5″ of natural snow this season. An average snowfall season for the resort is 180″. Last season, 132.5″ fell on the resort between October and April. The long term forecast shows cold air lingering on the mountain, which will allow Snowshoe’s expert snowmaking team to continue to pump man-made snow onto the slopes. With the combined efforts of Mother Nature and the resort’s snowmaking power, Snowshoe has 4 to 5 feet of snow covering many of its slopes.
