CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine – Thanks to favorable temperatures throughout much of the week, Sugarloaf, the largest ski area east of the Rocky Mountains, will kick off its 63rd season on Friday, November 22 at 8:30am.
Sugarloaf’s snowmakers began making snow on Tote Road last week, and were able to continue this week, thanks to temperatures that have consistently been in the teens and low 20s.
The crew utilized nearly $2 million worth of new low-energy HKD snowguns that have been installed at the resort over the last two seasons, including 135 new guns this summer. The new guns are able to produce the same amount of snow as traditional, older equipment, while using up to 90 percent less compressed air, and produce greater quantities of snow at marginal temperatures (20-30 degrees).
Skiing and riding on opening day will be available on the Tote Road trail, with lift service available on the SuperQuad. The resort will remain open seven days a week after Friday’s opening. Lift tickets on opening day will be just $39 for adults and just $29 for juniors and seniors.
The offseason snowmaking investment was part of Sugarloaf’s ten-year development plan, called Sugarloaf 2020, which the resort unveiled in 2010. The 2020 vision includes plans for new lifts, improved snowmaking infrastructure, and a massive, 650 acre expansion onto neighboring Burnt Mountain, making Sugarloaf the largest ski area east of the Rocky Mountains.
In addition to the new snowmaking technology, Sugarloaf also cut an additional 70 acres of new glades on Burnt Mountain, and installed a new 30-person outdoor hot tub at the Sugarloaf Mountain Hotel. For complete details on the Sugarloaf 2020 plan, please visit www.sugarloaf2020.com.
