CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine — Sugarloaf’s fabled Backside Snowfields will open for the season on Saturday, Jan. 5, the earliest opening date since 1997, due to substantial snowfall. The double black diamond, above treeline experience is unlike any other terrain in the East with wide open expanses and dramatic pitches.

“The snowfields are part of Sugarloaf’s unique mountain experience,” said Frank Guerriero, Sugarloaf’s marketing director. “Because of the Snowfields’ openness, it takes a tremendous amount of natural snow to fill them in. With more than 100 inches of snow already on the ground, Sugarloaf is able to open the only lift-serviced, above treeline access in all of New England.”

With 360 degree views that extend from Mount Washington to Canada and beyond, Sugarloaf’s summit and Snowfields mark the highest elevation of any resort in Maine and New Hampshire.
