Bolton Valley 1/28

Conditions: Powder, Packed Powder, Firm underneath in high traffic areas

I decided to head to Bolton solo yesterday, based on snowfall totals and the fact that all of the main lifts were on wind hold for at least most of Friday. There was around 6 or 7 inches of fresh on Timberline, and close to a foot at the summits of Vista and Wilderness. Turned out to be a good choice.
Pulled into the lot around 9, and it was already packed. Apparently there was a snowmobile race on a couple Timberline trails that added to the crowd. Parking was completely full and cars were driving in circles looking for spots by late morning, but the lift lines were never longer than a few minutes, and sometimes ski on on Timberline. It took a couple minutes at the window to use my Freedom pass, where I also learned that all upper lifts were on hold, but expected fairly soon. After taking my time in the lodge I took a quick warm up run on one of the lower mtn doubles, and then went back up and headed to Timberline which was rumored to be opening around 10. After waiting about 10 minutes it loaded and I got about 5th chair. First run was with my chair mates down Lost Boyz. Very nice mostly untracked powder. An instructor in the group said it was his best run of the season. Worth a do over. After 2 Lost Boyz and another lightly tracked trail, word was that Vista was opening, so back to that side. Vista Glades skied good, but there was solid icy stuff lurking underneath. Not quite as good as Timberline. Few runs there, when word came that Wilderness was finally opening. Wow, great untracked stuff on the top half that had not been skied since last weekend. Wilderness woods were epic, and the trails up top were good also, but still some solid stuff lurking underneath. Going from pod to pod, as they opened, worked perfectly to find fresh snow all day until leaving around 3. For Edds beer request, $5 Harpoons all the time, and $4 Long Trail Green Blaze on Thursday's. I like the Green Blaze.
