Cannon, 12/30/16

What a ZOO!!! This must have been the busiest that I've ever seen here. I arrived by 8:30 and was lucky to find a few remaining parking spots in the Peabody lot. As we walked up, the line to get tickets would have frighted me away right there had it not been for the fact that I bought the tickets for me and my son the day before. My son skied on Thursday - I knew better and decided to have nice hike instead that day.

The TV weather people really cranked up the snow apocalypse propaganda predicting 12-18 inches. It was sad to see that the Cannon Mountain snow report for today validated that with a right out lie of 13-15 inches. Maybe in some drifts, but I sincerely doubt that they got more than 8-10 inches. It definitely wasn't on the slopes. The natural cover slopes (ex. Skylight) had really skinny cover.

That said, the new snow did make for some good skiing. Lots of soft moguls but still, persistent ice down below and more that present. I really wish the mountain could come up with some solution to what I call the "ice funnel" which is the whole area of the middle trails above Zoomer (Extention and Rock Garden - on current Cannon trail map).

Everything off Zoomer skied really well, well into the end of the day. My favorite of the day: Upper Cannon: well set, rhythmic moguls with very little ice.

The crazy lift lines abated after 2 PM and the mountain begun to feel "normal" through the rest of the afternoon. So, in the end I got enough runs to be happy and burn up my quads.
