HIGHMOUNT, New York ??” March 11 & 12, 2006 is packed with fun for skiers and snowboarders of all ages. Kicking it off is Skier Appreciation Day on Friday, March 10, with all lift tickets only $15.
Saturday, March 11, the entertainment begins with the third annual Cardboard Classic. Belleayre will provide anyone who wants to join with the cardboard and duct tape needed to make a sled, or you can make one at home and bring it in. At 1 pm, the sleds will race down the slope, with awards based on sled creativity, how far the sled goes intact, and overall performance.
Clear Channel of the Hudson Valley is bringing back the Slope Spies on Saturday. Registration is free, and then just go out skiing. The Slope Spies Crew will be out on the mountain looking for their special tickets, and when they “spy” you, they’ll send you in to collect one of many prizes.
Also on Saturday is the Amstel Light Race, a fun Nastar race for those over age 21. The race is highlighted by great drink specials on Amstel Light in the bar, and a huge amount of prizes for race winners. And the ever-popular Ski Patrol BBQ will start after the lifts close on Saturday, with a complete chicken dinner provided by the famous Brook’s Barbeque of Oneonta, NY.
Sunday, March 12 is the Shandaken Day and Race at Belleayre Mountain, featuring the new documentary “Shandaken Remembered: From Beginnings to Bicentennial”, a recent film produced by Shandaken residents to capture the story of the Town’s rich history and exuberant Bicentennial Celebration. Pre-registration for the race is $20, which includes an all day Belleayre lift ticket and the race fee.
Sunday is also the Robert Warfield Ski-a-Thon, an event to raise funds for the Warfield Family, long-time friends of Belleayre as well as employees. Robert Warfield was critically injured in a motorcycle accident last summer, and is still recovering in the hospital. The mounting medical bills are astronomical, and friends of the Warfields’ have planned the Ski-a-Thon to help out.
