CHERRY HILL, New Jersey ??” The Eastern Ski Writers Association is sponsoring a new internship in snowsports journalism in conjunction with St. Michael’s College in Vermont.

The internship will be offered during the 2005-06 season at ESWA’s four seasonal meetings: Dec. 2 through 4, 2005 – Bretton Woods, N.H.; Jan. 6 through 8, 2006 – Belleayre Mountain, N.Y.; Feb. 4 through 6, 2006 – Loon Mountain, N.H.; and March 10 through 12 2006 – The Balsams, N.H.

It is open to a student who is either a junior or senior in the journalism department at St. Mike’s. In addition to providing a student with an opportunity to work closely with more than 100 journalists, the internship will provide an opportunity for the student to get his or her work published in several magazines and newspapers.

“I am very excited that the Saint Michael’s College journalism department will be placing a student in the Eastern Ski Writers Association’s internship program in the spring,” said David T.Z. Mindich, who chairs the journalism department at the college. “This is a great opportunity for our students.”

The goal of the internship, according to EWSA president Richard Butler, is to not only promote winter sports to a younger generation, but offer a student a rare opportunity into a unique niche of journalism. “This ESWA-sponsored project is key to the successful continuation of our species,” ESWA President Richard Butler said. “It is the duty of ESWA to play a role in passing the torch to future generations of writers.”

The internship will be outlined as a course in the practicum program at St. Mike’s. The student will receive a grade and close scrutiny from a team of veteran journalists.

ESWA is an organization comprised of media and corporate representatives from the eastern portion of North America. Its goal is to promote and maintain the highest standards of snowsports journalism. ESWA is the eastern division of the North American Snowsports Journalists Association.
