National Brotherhood of Skiers-Eastern Region Selects Loon for Winterfest 2007

MIAMI, Florida — The National Brotherhood of Skiers (NBS) — Eastern Region will host its annual 2007 Eastern Region at Loon Mountain, New Hampshire from March 22-25, 2007. More than 500 skiers, snowboarders and winter enthusiasts from NBS clubs across the country will participate in this week-long event. “We chose Loon Mountain for Winterfest 2007 because of its diverse offerings both on and off the slopes,” said Sheris Williams, Winterfest Chairperson. Loon offers children’s programs, a racing component, ample reception and function space, plus 5 terrain parks, a half-pipe, Superpipe and history of hosting elite events.

The Winterfest event includes numerous ski and non-ski activities, youth races featuring the Eastern region members of the National Brotherhood of Skiers (NBS-ER) National Youth Race Team, club competitions, adult races, a bid whist tournament, the traditional barbeque on the hill, entertainment and more. Many of the organization’s sponsored youth racers will be on hand to train and talk with the membership as well. According to Dwayne Wilkins, Vice President of NBS-ER, “fundraising for Youth Programs is the main focus of our organization, and we welcome the opportunity to expose and train our youth in a sport that they may not ordinarily experience. Loon offers terrain for all types of skiers and snowboarders making it a magnet for those who revel in a family atmosphere.”

“We are extremely excited that the NBS chose to celebrate their 2007 Winterfest at Loon Mountain,” stated Rick Kelley, Loon Mountain Vice President and General Manager. “We are looking forward to sharing our resort with the NBS and providing an experience and memories that are second to none.”

The National Brotherhood of Skiers, Inc. is a non-profit organization and was founded in 1973 in Aspen, Colorado. The membership is dominantly African-American with approximately 14,000 adults and 12,000 youths nationwide. The NBS’ mission is to identify, select and finance training to potential Olympic caliber minority youths. It is the only organization that provides youth ski training scholarships to ski academies as well as nationally funded and regional based motivational programs. Additionally, the NBS hosts the largest ski summit in the nation.

The NBS Eastern Region is comprised of 26 clubs from Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Virginia and the District of Columbia, with 6,000 members collectively. The region’s leadership team includes Vice President Dwayne Wilkins (New York, NY), Peggie Mollnow (Albany, NY) and Ray Campbell (Tampa, Fl).
