WILMINGTON, New York ??” 2he New York Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA), as a result of its relationship with the New York Power Authority (NYPA), teamed up with Head Start and Whiteface this winter to introduce approximately 90 youngsters to the sport of skiing.

NYPA provided these deserving Head Start youth, who represented five schools in the Lake Placid, Saranac Lake and Plattsburgh areas, the opportunity to become introduced to these winter activities. NYPA provided the instruction, rentals and lift tickets from Whiteface.

“Without the assistance of NYPA, many of these kids would not have had the chance to participate in this learning experience,” said John Marine, ORDA Corporate Development Representative. “The excellent snow sports school at Whiteface enabled these boys and girls to try skiing at a young age with high-level instruction. This was an opportunity of a lifetime for them. We hope to see these kids returning as seasoned skiers, while telling other Head Start students of their successes.”

In addition, Saranac Lake was part of a pilot program for Whiteface’s trademarked Parallel From The Start ski learning theory. These children were the youngest to ever attempt Parallel From The Start and did so with excellent results.

NYPA collaborates with ORDA’s Sports Development Department to introduce area children to many of these thrilling winter sports.
