WILMINGTON, N.Y. — For the 20th consecutive year, readers of Ski Magazine have tabbed Whiteface/Lake Placid, N.Y. as the number-one destination for Off-Hill activities. Results from the 23rd annual reader’s survey were announced in the magazine’s October issue.

In the article, the publication describes events and activities on the New York State Olympic Regional Development Authority (ORDA) Olympic venues, such as speed skating on the Olympic oval, on Main St., in Lake Placid, a visit to the famed 1980 Rink Herb Brooks Arena, elevator rides to the top of the 120-meter ski jump and of course bobsled rides at Mt. Van Hoevenberg.

“This ranking continues to show how much Whiteface/Lake Placid has to offer for skiers and non-skiers alike,” said ORDA chairman Pat Barrett. “There is so much that separates us from other ski destinations throughout the northeast, not to mention the shopping and dining opportunities.

“So whether guests are here to experience the east’s greatest vertical at the Olympic mountain, or find refuge in the region, there’s something for everyone, fitting almost every budget.”

In addition to receiving the magazine’s highest ranking for Off-Hill activities, Whiteface, Wilmington and Lake Placid also received high marks from the magazine’s readers for its scenery (#3), resort dining (#3), après ski (#3), challenging terrain (#7), mountain character (#8), family programs (#11) and overall satisfaction (#11).

The start of another exciting skiing and riding season on the Olympic mountain is just around the corner. The 2012-‘13 season is expected to begin, conditions permitting, Friday, Nov. 23. New upgrades this season include the addition of snowmaking to Hoyt’s High Trail, the purchase of a new Pistenbully 600W groomer as well as the addition of several new low-energy snowmaking guns.

When skiers and riders aren’t on Whiteface’s 86 trails and 3,430 of vertical, they can enjoy the newly renovated Base Camp Market (formerly the Base Camp Café) and Cloudspin Lounge, both located in the mountain’s base lodge. Partnering with Centerplate, the Base Camp Market will have a new look to go along with new menus and food choices. New choices will range from the Black Diamond Burrito to Pinetree Pizza Co. Other areas of the food court include the Firepit Grill, the Lean-To Deli, and the Backcountry Soups and Chili.
Meanwhile, the Cloudspin Lounge will remain a favorite après ski spot with a newly expanded bar area and pub-like atmosphere. The new menu will focus on pub and bar food.

Skiers and riders can still save on a Whiteface Mountain seasons pass. Through Nov. 15, the adult non-holiday pass is available for just $699, while the adult full-season pass is just $869.

The young adult and college season pass can be purchased for $385 and the junior pass is only $299. Skiers and riders ages six and under can ski or ride the Olympic mountain all season long for just $40.
