Super Sundays Back at Whiteface Mountain

WILMINGTON, New York — The 52nd season of skiing and riding at Whiteface is underway and the Olympic mountain is kicking off its winter events, Sunday, Dec. 13, with its first of five Super Sundays along with an open rail jam and telemark skiing equipment demonstration day.

Adult lift tickets are just $35, teens are $30 and juniors are $25, Sunday, and the party kicks off with the “Hello my Name is….”Rail Jam, brought to you by Cunningham’s Ski Barn, at 11 a.m. Participants may sign up at the guest services desk from 8 to 10 a.m. and during this jam format event; competitors may hit the rails as many times as they can with the best trick. An awesome selection of winning prizes will be provided by Cunningham’s Ski Barn. The cost is $10 and helmets are required. High Peaks Cyclery is also presenting a demo day of telemark ski equipment from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The industries top suppliers will be on hand including Garmont, Scarpa, Dynafit, Alpina, K2, Goode, MSR and Black Diamond. Free one-hour telemark clinics are scheduled for 9:30 a.m., 11 a.m., 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Pre-registration is required for all clinics, so call High Peaks Cyclery at 518.523.3764, or log on to www.highpeakscyclery.com. All demos are free to all lift ticket holders, however; each individual must give a credit card and valid ID (ie driver’s license) for a deposit until gear is returned.

At the end of day, the party moves to the Cloudspin Lounge. There will be live music by Trenchtown Oddities, hailing from Ottawa, Ontario, which begins at 3 p.m., while the movie “Hit or Miss,” written and directed by local skier Craig Stays of CS Films, will show during their break.

Whiteface boasts the East’s greatest vertical drop, and was recently named to the Top Five Resorts in the East in SKI Magazine’s Reader Resort Survey 2010. The mountain also received kudos for Apres Ski Activities (No. 4), Scenery (No. 5), Challenge and Family Programs (No. 6), Lodging (No. 6), Overall Value (No.7), and Terrain/Variety (No. 8 ). Whiteface/Lake Placid also earned the distinction of being #1 in the nation for Off-Hill Activities for the 17th straight year.
