White Heat at Sunday RiverNewry, Maine (December 13, 2013)—On Saturday, December 14, Sunday River Resort will kick off its birthday weekend celebration – Winterfest Weekend – with another milestone: the 25th consecutive opening of the “longest steepest widest lift-serviced expert trail in the East”—White Heat.

“Anytime you’re able to open White Heat in December, you know Mother Nature has been on your side,” Dana Bullen, Resort President and General Manager, says.

Located on the resort’s White Cap Mountain, White Heat is serviced by the White Heat Quad chairlift which climbs 1,294 feet over the trail length of 3,665 feet. Total vertical of White Cap is 1,630 vertical feet.

Sunday River Resort first expanded onto White Cap back the winter of 1988/89. At the time, the resort was five interconnected mountains wide with 56 trails and 11 lifts, and White Heat was the resort’s most challenging terrain.

Today, Sunday River Resort boasts 135 trails and 820 skiable acres across eight interconnected mountain peaks, and is the second largest ski area in New England.

White Heat remains one of the resort’s most challenging trails along with glades like Hardball and Chutzpah, located on either side of the “longest steepest widest lift-serviced expert trail in the East.”

Sunday River Resort opens at 8 a.m. on Saturday and is expecting to have upwards of 55 trails open and 9 lifts.

As part of its Winterfest celebration, the resort is also offering $5 night skiing from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Saturday.
